‘Watch’ Exercise

A simple training exercise to work with your dog

This worksheet has been provided to us by Wagology Dog Behaviour & Training, owned by our very own behaviour expert, Lisa. Any tips we have provided should be used along with talking to a behaviour expert for individual guidance.

The Watch Exercise

  1. Fill a small, sealable container or training treat pouch with medium-value rewards.
  2. Take one of the rewards and place it between your forefinger and thumb.
  3. Show this treat to your puppy or dog.
  4. Then extend your arm out, then return your hand back towards your face.
  5. As you make this movement, your puppy or dog should be ‘watching’ your hand move towards your face.
  6. As they make eye contact around your face area, mark with ‘YES’ or ‘GOOD’ and reward with a tasty treat from your other hand.

Repeat 6 to 7 times.

Once your puppy or dog is consistently focusing on your face, you can then move the exercise on to include the cue word ‘WATCH’.

  1. Take one of the rewards and place it between your forefinger and thumb.
  2. Show this treat to your puppy or dog.
  3. Then extend your arm out, then return your hand back towards your face.
  4. As you make this movement, add in the cue word ‘WATCH’, and your puppy or dog should be focused on your face.
  5. Again, as they make eye contact around your face area, mark with ‘YES’ or ‘GOOD’ & reward with a tasty treat from your other hand.

Repeat 6 to 7 times.
