They’re friendly, sociable, and love being around people — so they’ll be fine in kennels… right?
It’s a common assumption.
But the reality is that not every dog finds kennels easy, even if they appear to cope on the surface.
For many Sprockers, kennels represent a big change. New surroundings, unfamiliar routines, different smells and sounds, and time away from their people can all create stress.
Some dogs show that stress clearly. They may bark more, struggle to settle, or go off their food.
But others respond in a quieter way.
They may become withdrawn, sleep more, and appear calm. While this can look like a dog who is coping well, it can sometimes be a sign that they are feeling overwhelmed rather than relaxed.
Because these dogs are not disruptive, their stress can easily be missed.
That is often why behaviour changes show up later, once the dog is back home. Owners might notice their dog is more unsettled, more sensitive, or more reactive than before.
This does not mean kennels are “bad,” or that something has gone wrong. It simply highlights that different dogs respond to the experience in different ways.
Some Sprockers adapt well, particularly with gradual introductions and the right environment. Others, especially those who are more sensitive or strongly bonded to their owners, may find it more difficult.
The key is to look at the individual dog, rather than relying on general assumptions about the breed.
If kennels are being considered, small steps like trial stays and choosing a quieter setup can help make the transition easier.
It is also worth being aware that alternatives such as home boarding or pet sitters may suit some dogs better, offering a more familiar and less overwhelming experience.
Ultimately, it is not about whether a dog should be fine in kennels.
It is about understanding what helps that dog feel safe, settled, and supported.
